Successful marketing is about building relationships. Make sure you have a network of contacts AND you are keeping in touch with them on a regular basis. Here are some tips to help you:
  1. Define a network of influence (clients, friends, families, former co-workers, etc.) that is at least 100 people.

  2. Create an organized database that contains your network's contact information.

  3. In your database, record highlights from every phone or in-person conversation.

  4. Touch base with each member of your network at least every quarter.

  5. Follow-up every conversation you have with handwritten notes.

  6. Don't be afraid to selectively ask people in your network for referrals.

  7. Invite people in your network out for lunch or coffee.
Networking is not an opportunity for you to slam someone with a sales pitch. Instead, it is an exchange of ideas. View it as an opportunity to help someone else. Be generous in sharing your experiences and expertise. Look for ways to refer your network contacts to other people.

Networking is not about quantity; it's about quality. It's enjoyable, and it enriches the lives of both parties. If you want others to open the door for you, open it for them first. Building relationships takes time and patience, but it will serve you for life. People trust people who are their friends.

ACTION ITEM: Today, call 3 people in your network and ask them for a coffee "date." Ask them about their business and work on looking for ways you can help them. Do this often and be patient. Ultimately, you'll find your circle of friends will richly reward you.
