Attention from the media is an amazing tool for marketing your business! But, how do you get their attention? Grasshopper, you must think like the reporters. The number one question in their mind is, "Why would our readers/viewers be interested in this story now?" Make your story idea newsworthy and timely.

Here are some ideas to help your press release get attention:

  1. Tell a story: Reporters love real-life examples with human interest. Explain how you helped a local customer solve a problem. Give details that will help a story come to life.

  2. Facts and figures: Provide statistics for the story. For example, if you are building a new facility, list square footage, the number of additional customers you will be able to serve, and number of new employees you will hire.

  3. Piggyback on national news: Find a news angle for your press release that connects your company or product to current events. For instance, a local fitness center could tie into the national trend of increasing obesity.

ACTION ITEM: This week, write down three story ideas you can use to generate publicity for your company. Then, pick one to develop into a press release. Ideas for an angle: upcoming events, new technology/product, a recent award, or cutting-edge research.

That's it for now. One last question, are you making enough time for publicizing your business? If you aren't tooting your own horn, who will?

I would love to hear from you about your latest publicity success. Send me an e-mail: Wendy@kinesisinc.com
